SAFETY PRECAUTION FOR MAINTENANCE
2.5.2 PRECAUTIONS FOR INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
2.5.2.1 PRECAUTION WHEN WELDING
WARNING
EXPLOSION AND FIRE!
Welding, flame-cutting and grinding work on the excavator increases the risk of explosion and fire which
may result in serious injury or death.
All relevant safety measures must be followed and only under expressly obtained authorization.
WARNING
RESIDUAL ENERGY RELEASED!
Serious injuries can occur when uncontrolled energy is released during welding or any cutting work.
All relevant safety measures must be followed to prevent the uncontrolled release of energy.
Welding operations must always be carried out by a qualified welder and in a place equipped with proper equip-
ment. There is a hazard of gas, fire, or electrocution when carrying out cutting work or welding, so never allow any
unqualified personnel to carry out welding. When carrying out welding work, always wear welding gloves, apron,
shielding goggles, cap and other clothes suited for welding work (PPE).
2.5.2.2 BATTERY HANDLING
WARNING
EXPLOSION AND FIRE!
Battery electrolyte contains sulphuric acid, and batteries generate flammable hydrogen gas, which may
explode. Wrong handling can lead to serious injury or fire. For this reason, always observe the following
precautions.
β Do not use or charge the battery if the battery electrolyte level
is below the LOWER LEVEL line. This may cause an explo-
sion. Check the battery electrolyte level periodically and add
distilled water to bring the electrolyte level to the UPPER
LEVEL line.
β When working with batteries, always wear safety glasses and
rubber gloves.
β Never smoke or use any flame near the battery (Fig. 2-45).

General
The rotative energy from Diesel engine drives the gears in the pump distributor gearbox (PTO).
The gearbox drives the main and the auxiliary pumps. The pumps generate hydraulic oil flow to the cylinder
or to the hydraulic motors.
The main high pressure hydraulic circuit is generated by three swash plate type tandem pumps.
Each main pump (tandem pump) consists of two single pumps and one impeller. The impeller on
the pump suction side supports the main pump with oil from the hydraulic oil tank.
Each main pump has a drive through shaft, so auxiliary pumps can be flanged directly onto the main pump head.
β Main pump #1 is equipped with an auxiliary pump for the engine coolant radiator fan.
β Main pump #2 is equipped with an auxiliary pump for the hydraulic oil cooler fan.
β Main pump #3 is equipped with an auxiliary pump for a) pilot circuit and b) bleeder pump.

General
The hydraulic drive consists 3 tandem pumps (each 991 l/min, total volume 2973 l/min).
The hydraulic system includes the work equipment, slew circuit and travel circuit.
The sub-circuits are fed by the auxiliary pumps.
Description
Each main tandem pump consist of two separate swashplate pumps (Fig. 9-4, Pos. 1 & 2) which are assembled
in line and one impeller pump on the suction side.
Both single pumps in each main pump are individually regulated by a servo valve (Fig. 9-4, Pos. 6).
The servo valve (Fig. 9-4, Pos. 6) is equipped with EPC valve, VC valve and swashplate angle sensor.

Hydraulics for the travel system Operating hydraulics
The travel brake valve acts as a flow control valve in order to avoid the travel motors picking up speed when
traveling downhill. Each travel gear includes a spring loaded multi-disk brake (refer to section Fig. 10-76 on
page 10-80). They are used as parking brakes, automatically applied by the function of 57Q516 whenever the
engine is switched OFF, or the access stairway or the refilling arm are not in upper end position. The leak oil (case
drain) flows through leak oil lines back to the tank.

Central refilling system (Service arm) Grease refill and Auto Stop function
Function
Grease refill auto stop is a function that detects that the grease tank (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 6) is full when supplying the
grease from the grease refilling coupler (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 4) of the service arm panel (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 8), and
automatically stops press-feeding the grease.
When grease tank (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 4) is full level sensor high (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 7) is activated and gives a signal to
the VALVE 2 controller (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 3). The VALVE 2 controller closes the Shut-off-Vale (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 5). The
pressure in the filling line from the lube tank is raising up.
The lube pump of the truck has to be shut off.
Depending on which grease port is connected the release switch (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 1 or 2) has to be pushed.
For SLS Grease the pressure release switch (55S100b) (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 1) and for the CLS Grease the pressure
release switch (55S100a) (Fig. 13-4, Pos. 2.) has to be pushed.
After that, the grease line is pressureless and the quickcoupling can be disconnected.
NOTICE
DAMAGED GREASE REFILLING SYSTEM!
The shut off valve will be damaged and must be removed, when the grease charge pressure will exceed
20.5MPa.
To avoid the damage to the shut off valve, the grease charge pressure must never exceed 20.5MPa.
REMARKS: In case of a damaged shut off valve, contact the local KOMATSU dealer.
